In the original DOA the two people had been seeing each other a long time, and he tells her twice he loves her and the second time is over the phone. In fact, the love interest is more than a side thing because he is dealing with three things, Dying, Finding out who is killing him, and trying to accept that he loved this woman more than he ever realized and should have married her a long time before this happened. The ending was really stupid, I know everyone loves it, but he finishes the story for the police reporter who is taking it down, no tapes then, and he says something like that the entire story, and he sort of shudders and dies, and one guy says to the police head guy, what do we say about him, and the head guy says, "DOA" It is just like, where is the miracle cure??? I can't explain why it was so stupid, but I was not going to waste my time liking a character who dies like that in the end. He loses everything. Now, this could prove that the original was used because in the end, the hero loses everything. Sorry for the sarcasm. Just a matter of taste.
