Jasper, I totally agree with you and have a few more comments about how psychology works for Fuhrman--and when it doesn't.
For it to work, the person must be in a position of trust with Fuhrman or is in awe of him or has some kind of idea that he is an expert. It doesn't work for those of us who did not buy into that theory/persona that Fuhrman puts out.
It is very apparent in the Martha Moxley case where he was sponsored by Dom Dunne whom the Moxley's were already tight with. They were "promised" a solution to an over 25 year heartbreak that they were anxious to pin on someone. Michael Skakley (sp) may or may not be guilty (I didn't pay that much attention to the trial) but I sure wouldn't depend on Fuhrman to be the solver of the case. (look how he screwed up in the Spokane case) But the Moxley's were grateful for a solution and so they can get on with their lives...
You see the same thing with victim's families and DA's who have "bought" into the guilt of a certain party and when evidence (like DNA) clears them they still maintain the guilt of the party even if the DNA does not match and they have a confession of someone it does match. They can't "give up" the idea that the one that they thought was guilty for years is actually innocent. And seek to retry them or continue to say they are guilty.
Many truly believe Fuhrman is some kind of "super detective". His current appearances on tv in connection with the DC shooter and the hosts calling him "Mark" and holding their breath for every utterance from him shows that. Even though he must be the ONLY person in the world claiming this shooter is using a hand gun. No lie! I heard him say so the other night.
I think he promotes that image of himself (of course, a no brainer) but I think he always has--esp. around the lower level peon cops that worked cases with him.
I sure we have all worked with someone who always seemed to KNOW MORE, take the lead and pull the others in the group along to their way of thinking. I think Fuhrman is such a person.
Throw in (back in 94) the thin blue line and the cop's code of silence and you have someone who probably pulled this case along by holding onto the noses of the other cops and pulled them into a certain direction.
The very thing that makes him successful at this is the same thing that made him the person most sought after to testify in court to things he knew nothing about and never witnessed.
He is a likeable (by his co-workers) psychopath con man.
