Jasper, you are continully amazinly astute. And can express your thinking in a clear concise way. There is a psycological game called "lets you and him fight". The game is based on the concept that the girl gets two guys fighting over her and once they are bloodied, walks off with the 3rd guy. Or you can think of two hero types fighting over the golden prize and while they are fightning and not paying attention to the prize, some unnoticed thief just reaches over and steals it. It is what we are not seeing while concentrating on the main arena that is the danger. The question is who is the theif lurking in the shadows that when the timeing is right will walk off with the girl and the prize leaving the rest of us saying, "What happened?"
