Fuhrman’s style is characterized by careful planning, extensive research, attention to detail, multiple options, improvisation, gross exaggeration, prevarication, strategic time shifting and self-promotion. He builds or worms his way into influential networks, works with teams and bides his time until he can take the best advantage of them.
My Iago hypothesis seemed to have a zillion holes in it until I started looking at the networks he hooked into prior to the Bundy murders. This guy had more friends with big connections than the Pope.
By making “friends” with Ron Shipp in 1985 Fuhrman had his foot in the door to a forgery expert, a spouse abuse expert, a possible link to cocaine distribution among the Hollywood elite and a man on the inside of O.J.’s personal life. He had a link to Denise Brown and Faye Resnick. His position in the Police Protective League could have given him the leverage to put Ron Phillips in charge of all West LA. homicides. His friendship with Phillips guaranteed that he would be the first detective called on any big murder case. He was now a homicide detective with inside information about “O.J.’s continuing abuse of Nicole.” His rumors in ’92 of having an affair with Nicole took care of that.
Fuhrman tried to get into the Robbery/Homicide Division. Although he failed, the effort gave him an inside look at how RHD worked. That could have been his plan all along.
By making friends with Laura Hart and getting involved with her in a screenplay project he got an inside look at the industry and the process, to see where the real power lay and to learn what they liked and didn’t like. He got a chance to study many of them in person.
Fuhrman’s direction of police activity on Rockingham (he had researched the issue beforehand) plus O.J.’s spouse abuse record was an absolute guarantee that Marcia Clark would get directly involved in the case.
The way Nicole was killed and the clues left behind by the killer, so reminiscent of the Dominique Dunne and Martha Moxley murders, guaranteed a high level of interest by Dominick Dunne – and Eagle, the parent company of Regnery Publishing, Inc.
At this point we can only speculate about Fuhrman’s early interest in the Vincent Foster case. But given what we know about Fuhrman it’s not out of the question to guess that much of what he did and how he did it before and after the Bundy murders was done with Foster in mind. If Fuhrman did his homework on book publishing he would know how to troll for the publisher he wanted without being direct about it. He would have known how to write a book proposal that would be rejected by a dozen publishers and ONE that might be accepted by Eagle or Regnery, a Washington based publisher. He never needed most people to confide in him. He only needed the right few. –Jasper
