The operative word here is “formula.”
The name of my book “Iago in Brentwood” comes from a marriage of Fuhrman’s Murder in Brentwood and Shakespeare’s villain Iago in his play Othello. Fuhrman used the same formula that Iago used to advance himself by making Casio and Desdemona appear to be committing adultery in the eyes of Othello and setting up Othello the murder both of them. Don’t be confused by superficial twists in the formula here and there.
Fundamentally, it’s the same formula. You see it in movies all the time (remember Ricochet with Denzel Washington and John Lithgow?). The twists only make each application of the formula SEEM original. Change the costumes, the names and the settings, play mix and match with the characters and their roles, and it looks different but it isn’t. The formula has been around for so many centuries because it has always worked so well – and because so few people recognize it for what it is.
McKinny’s collection of the tapes over so many years makes no sense. The shouldn’t have been spread so far apart and there should have been hundreds of them rather than two dozen or less. McKinney’s move to North Carolina doesn’t explain it because there was no need for face-to-face meetings to make the tape recordings. She could have gotten a little gadget from Radio Shack for a buck ninety-eight to make excellent recordings by telephone. If she didn’t know about it, Fuhrman certainly did. Their in-person “recording sessions” after McKinny moved to North Carolina had to have been set up for other reasons, for things that could only be done in person.
Same Time, Next Year gives us more than slices of life between an adulterous couple over many years, it gives us the BIG EVENTS of each previous year and the affects they had on the couple’s personal lives. We should have seen this in the McKinney tapes with Fuhrman’s visit to Rockingham in the last quarter of 1984. We should have seen it in a 1989 or 1990 tape with Fuhrman’s letter about O.J. to the city attorney. Why didn’t we? Because anything involving Fuhrman, O.J. and Nicole was too big to put on record. –Jasper
