Exactly.
Fuhrman HAD TO KNOW that the tapes could have become THE BIGGEST part of the case. You can’t beat controversy in a big case for getting your name in the papers and on the airwaves. All publicity is good if you can write a book about it. Even if the book stinks it’s going to become a best seller on name recognition alone.
By the same token, I believe that Fuhrman expected the tapes to come out sometime in ’94. I think he was fully prepared at that time to deal with it. I think that he honestly forgot about it when his testimony in the preliminary hearing and in the criminal trial made him the star he wanted to be and everyone was patting him on the back for “kicking Bailey’s butt” before Bailey asked the crucial question. That’s when I think his mind went blank and he stupidly answered that he hadn’t used the n-word to refer to a black person in the previous ten years.
That’s what I think Fuhrman was upset about – not about his disgrace in having the world hear what he said on tape, but in his failure to see what was coming and simply admit that he used the world. No big deal, particularly in the context of a character he was playing to impress a screenwriter. That’s what I believe he intended to tell Marcia if the issue had come up when he expected it to. It would have created a big controversy but it would have given him spin control, it would have helped to sell the screenplay and it wouldn’t have gotten him convicted of perjury. –Jasper
