I would like to recommend the book The LAPD Secret Police. I have forgotten the author's name but he is an ex-cop in the LAPD.

He tells of this gathering of info. He tells of how Gates got caught and was supposed to have destroyed it but didn't.

This is important since the LAPD made the claim that they knew nothing about OJ prior to the murders. This is not true. He says the gathering of the info was supposed to stop but it did not.

He tells of how a cop stayed at LAX and made note of who came and went (celebs) and was also given access to the computers by the airlines.

He tells of how with actors, actresses, politicians, influencial people, etc.there was a gathering of info such as what was their favorite restuarants, who their good friends are, what they order to eat at these restuarants, what kind of clothes and what brands they wear, what limo services they use, who they met with when, what kind of cars they drive, and their comings and going in the city. OH, I forgot--athletes were also in this list of people that got spied on and notes taken.

Gates even provided a "driver" for the mayor who turned around and spied on the mayor and turned it in to Gates.

Gates was able to "blackmail" the city council into keeping him til his retirement with the use of these files.

This sounds wild I know--but Gates actually got caught doing it and was ordered to burn the files--but did not--at least not all of them.

Some of the folks they kept files on were Frank Sinatra and others including some of the big athletes from the LA area. I can imagine that OJ Simpson would fit into this category.

Another person they had a file on was ex-gov Jerry Brown. Many other politicians.

This ex-cop also tells of knowing personally of cases where cops actually committed murder. (one detective and his partner killed their snitch who was the gay partner of one of the detectives) In order for it NOT to get out that they had a gay detective--they allowed the one to just retire immediately and the partner to just transfer to another department.

He states that the LAPD would do ANYTHING--including let murdering cops off--just to keep the "rep" of the deparment out of the news.

Later the Rampart Scandal was enough to show that this was still going on after Gates was gone.

And even the new chief of police has said publicly that the Rampart Scandal was more covered up than exposed.
