The clothes that Ron Goldman wore to Nicole’s condo on the 12th always struck me as odd – especially the boots.
I couldn’t see where Ron’s unshaven face fit into his plans for that evening either – until I flashed on an early scene in the 1983 movie The Hunger with Catherine Deneuve, Susan Sarandon and David Bowie. That was the scene where Miriam and John bring home a couple from a disco (like the Dragonfly where Ron, Faye and Nicole all went to party) for some sex-play and we first see the ankh. The male half of the couple looks like he needs a shave, a look that Don Johnson made popular in the Miami Vice TV series.
The Hunger is a horror flick, so things turn out badly for the picked-up disco couple. Miriam and John have them for supper – literally.
Miriam and John finish their supper, put the leftovers in plastic garbage bags and toss the bags in an incinerator. They make love in the shower (remember Nicole’s bathwater) where they vow that they will be together for eternity. Thus, we have the ankh, in place of vampire teeth as a symbol of life and death and life again in a “never-ending” cycle.
When John drops out of the picture, Miriam seduces a doctor named Sarah Roberts and Miriam gives Sarah an ankh necklace. Sarah’s boyfriend notices the golden ankh while he is having dinner with Sarah at a restaurant. She tells him what it means.
What if Ron Goldman got his idea for the new establishment from The Hunger? What if it wasn’t a Starbucks coffee shop as Faye said it was in her book but a strip club where young male dancers catered to wealthy female customers? What if the guys who were trying to call Ron on the 12th were supposed to be part of the deal?
Could Ron’s clothing have been a costume for a strip act that he wanted to try out with Nicole? I think so. He chose a brown flannel shirt, blue jeans and boots for a reason. He had plenty of time to shave after his work shift at Mezzaluna and he chose not to do it. Suppose he was playing a lumberjack. All he would have needed to complete the picture was a knit cap. He didn’t need to bring one because Nicole had two of them. –Jasper
