I don’t believe Ron intended to meet Stewart Tanner at the bar in Marina Del Rey. The more you question that story the shakier it becomes.
As I recall, the Baja Cantina was about 30 miles away from where Ron lived (within a block of Mezzaluna). The best route to take was down Bundy, directly past Nicole’s condo. Parking was permitted on Bundy in front of the condo, yet Ron, who was supposed to be there only to drop of the glasses en route to the Baja did not park the car he was supposedly driving on Bundy. It was found on Dorothy pointed away from Bundy and it is not at all clear to me when someone first saw it there.
Tanner had a general idea of where Ron lived but he did not know where his apartment was. Thus, they were not the buddies that Tanner portrayed them as being. They did not normally hang out together. They were not going there to eat because Ron ate before he left Mezzaluna.
Tanner got off of work a half hour later than Ron did. He did not have a suspended drivers license (that I know of) but Ron did. If they had any intention of being together that night at the Baja Cantina the logical way to do it would have been for Tanner to pick Ron up at his apartment and drive there together. According to Tanner’s story, he didn’t offer to drive Ron to Marina Del Rey and Ron didn’t ask him to. The issue didn’t even arise. According to Tanner it wasn’t even a solid date. Supposedly it was just an idea they kicked around that depended one of them calling the other to confirm it. Neither of them called.
The guy who worked at Mezzaluna that Ron did buddy around with, Brett Cantor, had been murdered at his home a year before. His killer had not been found. Ron, Nicole and Faye used to party at a nightclub where Canter had a 10 percent interest. Nicole was hanging around dangerous people. De Bellow, Ron’s boss, did not want Ron to fool around with her. You will also recall that De Bellow’s boss, Keith Zlmsowitch, had a brief fling with Nicole and that O.J. angrily brought his name up in the ’93 call that Nicole made to 911. Given the people who hung out at Mezzaluna that Nicole confided in, it’s hard for me to see how that story didn’t get around the restaurant. Also, Nicole’s “best friend” Faye was so strung out of drugs that she had to be institutionalized. Ron had a drug problem of his own.
Dropping off the glasses could only have been an excuse for Ron to do what he intended to do all along and Ron’s meeting with Tanner in Marian Del Rey could only have been a cover story to explain why Ron didn’t give them to Nicole the next day at Starbucks. –Jasper
