Yes, memory can be deceptive--esp. the longer you wait. But these were statements the guy made almost immediately after the murders.
What I am saying is there may some "unconscous" clues that he may be going by. It was dark outside--or not. When the Sunday pm rush on families getting ice cream was. How long he had been at work. When his break was. etc.
He recalled it enough to recall exactly what they ordered. That she got ice cream for the TWO kids and did not get any for herself.
As a person who works as a part-time cashier I can tell you there is no rhyme nor reason as to whether you recall the customers or not. Some I don't recall at all and others I recall everything about them coming thru the line--including what they bought or what they bought in general.
Sometimes it is because they are a regular customer that I have seen in the store many times or because of what they have on or whether they have kids with them or not.
There was something about the visit to the ice cream store that the guy recalled. Perhaps because she had been in there before. Perhaps because she had mixed race kids. He recalled that she talked to a man in a suit that he believed was with her.
For whatever reason, he thought it was later--and refused to set the time prior to 9pm.
