What I find so strang about the ankh is that it is an Egyptian religious symbol. Not exactly the thing that a good Jewish kid would be so into.
It was for a while very big in New Age people. So it is possible that he did not know that it was part of the Egyphtian religion. But hard to belive that no rabbi or someone knowledgebal had not told him.
