It could have been done using a dishcloth. Washed and then dried and laid down while being held securely with the dishcloth...fingers never touching the knife---much like you would do with silver flatware that you wash and put away after Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner.
I don't think they found a dishcloth lying there. I am sure of it.
Odd, to wipe it well and clean without prints and then put it down on the counter and not put it away.
