If the boys admitted to going into houses and stealing bear, why would they lie about “finding” lots of golf clubs laying around outside and killing Martha Moxley with one or more of them? Something is defiantly out of whack there.
Underage boys stealing beer, which they might have done for the beer as well as the thrill of doing it, is well within the sort of criminal behavior you can expect from a given percentage of all teenage boys. Stealing a rare set of golf clubs is another. That’s why, like you, it occurred to me that one of the boys did commit the first attack and someone else did the rest – the person who left the golf clubs outside. If they were scattered around it seems to me that someone tossed them out of a window to pick up later.
One thing, though, is beginning to make sense. Nobody wanted to get into examining the relationships that these black boys had with any of the white girls in Bell Haven. Andrea Shakespeare (Fuhrman invented a woman loosely based on her call Hildy Southerlyn) was a close friend of Julie Skakel, who was 18. Andrea might have been 17 or 18. One of the black boys was 17. The 15-year-old boys were the same age as Martha and her friend’s Helen Ix (Fuhrman called her Charity Foster) and Sheila McGuire, the girl who discovered Martha’s body.
Everybody close to Martha, including her brother and her parents, knew that she liked to drink beer. Fuhrman’s book suggests that Martha drank a LOT of beer. It had to come from somewhere. If she was closer to any of the black boys than anyone wanted to admit, isn’t it possible that she and her friends (including Michael and Tommy) were also involved in stealing beer from their neighbors’ houses? Were the black boys really “daring” in their theft of the beer or did someone let them into their houses when the folks were away or simply had it over?
Geoffrey Byrne was the kid in the car with Martha, Tommy, Michael and Helen, who knew the black kids. In Fuhrman’s movie, he changed Byrne’s name to Paul Joyce. The movie made it appear that he was Helen’s boyfriend. Did she have other boyfriends?
I’d like to know more about the beer. I’d also like to hear more about Tony Bryant’s story from Tony Bryant’s lips. Given what we know and what we THINK we know so far (some of it has to be wrong), the speculation can get pretty wild. –Jasper
