Right, the overall affect. With old bodies you get the smell of decaying flesh (decomposing cats, dogs and human’s smell the same – at least they do to me). I was just pointing out that the sense of smell is often involved when we see things and whatever odor we detect becomes a part of our emotional reaction
By the way, I have heard the smell of blood, in large quantities, described as “sickly-sweet,” or “cloying” and as “metallic.” I don’t think that it can be adequately described in words anymore than the pain of a heart attack can be adequately described until you’ve had one (I think that’s why so many people can’t tell when they are having one – the descriptions don’t match the feeling). In any event, if you leave the “sickly” out of the “sweet” you are defiantly describing something other than the smell. You are describing a positive reaction to the smell. –Jasper
