You can probably blame the absence of depositions from Lou, Tonya, Dominique and others in the civil trial somewhat on Judge Fujisaki. He gave every indication that his primary goal was to retire as close to the beginning of 1997 as possible. He geared his rulings toward achieving that end, preferably with as little delay as possible on “collateral issues” like the introduction of evidence and sworn testimony helpful to the defense.
Fujisaki put strict limitations on time, permissible lines of inquiry and witnesses. In addition, I think that Uelmen, Leonard and the Bakers were so swamped with things they had to do to counter the plaintiffs’ attacks on O.J. that getting depositions from all of the Browns fill off of the priority list.
Still, it would be nice to hear from O.J. or his defense team on why they didn’t insist on getting sworn statements from the members of the Brown family other than Denise. Maybe they thought Cora Fischman’s statement, her husband’s full-length photo of O.J. with Sydney at the recital and the video taken outside by the visitor from another state, were all they needed to counter Denise.
I must admit that Demise’s little huggy-kissy departure scene with O.J. (the “MF”) that we all saw on the out-of-towner’s candid camera did it for me. I’m afraid that I wasn’t looking for anything else with respect to Denise’s credibility after that. Maybe the same thing happened with O.J.’s defense team. --Jasper
