The contact prints must have disappeared for a reason and the emulsion number seems like the most likely reason. Presumably these guys were not professional counterfeiters so they could have overlooked the significance of the emulsion numbers just as you suggested. The FIRST thing a professional currency counterfeiter looks at is the paper. The first thing a professional painting counterfeiter looks at is the canvas. That’s why I think that the first thing a professional photo counterfeiter would look for would be the emulsion.
The reason I thought that McElroy and company would not make that mistake is because of what happened in the criminal trial with the Polaroid photo that Denise claimed she took after the ’89 incident. Darden tried to enter it into evidence. Ito stopped him because of the date on the back of the photo was 1979 and he knew from his own experience hat the self life for the film wasn’t long enough for Denise to have taken the photo when she said she did. It is hard for me to imagine that Lynch, Munson, Scull, Flammer and McElroy all missed that episode in the criminal trial and planned accordingly.
On the other hand, the rules of evidence in the civil trial were not nearly as strict as they were in the criminal trial and Judge Fujisaki showed a definite predilection for allowing just about any evidence or testimony against O.J. The fakers could have counted on that. Don’t you think it is also possible that the custodian of the pictures (whoever that was) got rid of the pictures just to make sure that nobody else could examine them? The custodian need not have had any special knowledge of what an independent examination would reveal, only a concern that they might show something that would prove they were fakes. --Jasper
