In Bushey’s place I would have given the same orders he did for reasons that had nothing to do with a conspiracy to get O.J. Simpson and much to do with the image of the LAPD.
He called RHD into the investigation because it was a high profile case. Cops at his level are politicians first and cops second. A murder case gets national news coverage only because a national reporter picked up an “angle” that he or she believes will capture the public imagination. The murder of a national celebrity or someone closely linked to one is certain to make the national news. The spotlight is certain to be on the celebrity.
The Browns were not celebrities. The Goldman’s were not celebrities. O.J. Simpson was a BIG celebrity. Furthermore, he lived only two and a half miles away from the murder scene and his young children were in the hands of strangers at a police station.
Bushey had no excuse NOT to order Phillips to make personal notification to O.J. for the sake of his kids more than his dead ex-wife. Phillips could have done it himself. He had three investigators working for him on the scene (Fuhrman, Roberts and Nolan). It would have been easy for him to send one or two of them. If they made personal notification they could escort O.J. to the station to get the children and bring them home if he wanted them to. If they had suspicions about his guilt they could gather information discretely from him without having to read him his rights and looking like stupid, insensitive jerks if they came up empty. If they saw something incriminating they could nail him.
The notification issue should never have gotten as far as Vannatter and Lange. When the four detectives got to the gate and no one answered the buzzer, they could have called O.J. then. His home phone number should not have been hard to get from Sydney, Nicole’s phone book, or Westec. By then I’m sure that Phillips, Vannatter and Lange were sure of O.J.’s guilt and looking for ways to prove it.
In other posts I said I believed that Phillips did send Fuhrman and Roberts to Rockingham, who went there and returned before Vannatter and Lange arrived. The question was whether Bushey or Fuhrman was pulling Phillips’ strings. Miss Marple’s extract from the preliminary hearing tells me that Fuhrman was pulling Phillips’ strings and Bushey’s.
Obviously, I agree with you about the movie connection to murders but A Killing Affair was only one of them. I guess I’ll have to get cracking on The Smoking Gun 3 after all. –Jasper
