Thank you. You have given any thoughtful person who has read the book plenty of reasons to reject your critique out of hand.
When I used my professional expertise to illustrate something that only an expert could see, you accuse me of making an irrational appeal to authority. You said that I don’t know as much as I thought I did and that you knew more although I have thirty years of experience in that area and you have zero. Now you ask what expertise I have to qualify me as a “profiler.” Now expert qualifications are essential to you. Anyone can make a profile just as anyone can make a boat. The test of its worth is if it floats.
I did not claim to draw my profile from special profiling expertise. I looked at the evidence then looked for a theoretical person who might fit it. I used my military experience in ascertaining some things (ideal kill zone IF a lookout could have been posted in the right spot, wounds constant with a specific military killing technique, etc.). I drew on my brother’s comments about evidence that a homicide detective IMMEDIATELY associates with a crime of passion and HIS profile of the killer based on his experience with domestic violence histories and bloody murder scenes. I built my profile the way I would build a model. I shaped it until I had a construction that matched each point in the picture someone painted of O.J.’s guilt and tested it from every angle. When your model hits every key point you know it’s correct. A bad model can’t do it.
Some of what you attribute to me came out of your head, not my book. For instance, I say that Fuhrman is a racist and a nazi. I say that he was obsessed with O.J. and Nicole and I say that he had a history of real and imagined violence against black people. I say that he had a national agenda. I do not say that’s what motivated him to commit the murders. I say that he was motivated by the desire to enhance his image for his writing and movie ambitions at O.J.’s expense by creating a sensational murder case then solving it. I say that his motive was a variation on Munchausen by proxy. I even define the term in the appendix (page 664) as I used it: Munchausen by proxy – The heroic response of people to a crisis situation that they create for the purpose of getting attention and respect.
As far as Fuhrman and Shipp are concerned, haven’t you ever heard the expression, “If you want to roast an Irishman you can always find another Irishman to turn the spit”?
The fact that Faye was a junkie made her uniquely valuable to Fuhrman. Cops use them as informants because they are easy to control. As with Shipp, there was no need for Fuhrman to take her into his confidence. She didn’t even have to know that he planned to kill anyone. Only Roberts had to know that. All she had t do was procure a few items and set the time and place for the “event,” whatever it might have been. A junkie wouldn’t care. Besides, who would believe her if she said, “Fuhrman did it”? You certainly wouldn’t because you firmly believe someone else did it – and because she was a junkie
I don’t think I need to go farther. Your observations where shallow. Your questions demonstrated that you did not think them through. Thanks again. –Jasper
