Unfortunately, I was composing my previous message while you were posting yours. The transcripts show that painting Michelle as the maid from hell (from Nicole’s point of view) was an integral part of the prosecution’s strategy to paint O.J. as a wife-beater. The tabloid press took up the prosecution theme and ran with it. Then the mainstream press picked it up from the tabloids and gave it the stamp of respectable journalism.
The press pulled this stunt on Lynden Johnson during the New Hampshire Democratic primary in 1968. When Eugene McCarthy got more votes than they expected he declared a moral victory. The press first repeated the moral victory and soon dropped the “moral.” For the next ten years they reported that Johnson withdrew from the race because of McCarthy’s victory over him in the New Hampshire Presidential primary. We might still be hearing that story if Walter Cronkite hadn’t done a commentary on the public’s impression of what happed vs. the record. Johnson won. And he won big.
Right after the 911 tape of the ’89 incident got released along with the tape of the ’93 call, we started getting stories about O.J. savagely beating Nicole. People swore they heard Nicole’s voice and O.J. ranting just before they heard her scream and then heard the slap. A recreation of the incident has her crying, “Oh no!” in terror before the slap and the scream. That’s not what happened. No words were spoken during the ’89 call. No evidence exists that Nicole made the call and no evidence was ever produced that O.J. lapped her, kicked her, pulled her hair, punched her, cut her lip and scratched her face.
There is far more evidence that Michelle did most of the damage to Nicole and the bushes she was hiding in did the rest. But there was never a way for O.J. to say so without sounding like he was hiding his guilt behind Michelle’s skirt as well as blaming the victim for what he did to her. I don’t think he ever realized that he might not have even been responsible for the bump on her forehead. He thought that he could have been. The more I study the incident the more I believe that he had nothing to do with it.
Early in the case Marcia Cark tried to assert that Michelle “opened the door” to the room for O.J. to come in and beat Nicole. She didn’t say which room but it certainly wasn’t the master bedroom. Lucky for her the defense didn’t want to pursue the matter. They wanted O.J. to “admit” that he beat her that one time and they were upset with him that he didn’t.
Marcia used Edwards’ statement that Michelle said, “there is no problem here” to make it appear that she protected O.J. at Nicole’s expense. And she used the fact that Michelle tried to pull Nicole out of the police car to show that she was so loyal to O.J. that she would say or do anything for him. It was fundamentally a racist argument built around an updated twist on the stereotype of a loyal slave who would do anything for the “Massa.”
O.J. didn’t have that kind of relationship with Michelle. He treated her like a human being and she retuned the favor. I think that was one of the issues Nicole, who never tired of playing the role of a rich man’s wife, had with O.J. and Michelle. It irked her that O.J. didn’t treat THEIR MAID the way she wanted him to, like a servant. –Jasper
