You have inadvertently given a strong argument for my reason for staying away from tabloids. They mix fact and gossip indiscriminately. Unless you have a primary source to help you discriminate between fact, distortion and pure fiction you can’t tell them apart.
In 1999, I made the mistake of giving a tabloid journalist a two-hour interview about Iago in Brentwood. Before he started taping he warned me that he was going to “spice it up a little to make it more controversial.” I went along with the jerk figuring that even bad publicity would help promote the book. I wanted controversy. I got something else.
The headline was so far removed from what we talked about that I didn’t recognize it and the content was absurd. He didn’t quote what I said; he paraphrased it with quotation marks around HIS words. Most of the article was about The Naked Gun producer Jim Abram’s angry reaction to the items the reporter doctored “slightly” and attributed to me. The man even attributed theories to me that I told him were illogical. Abram’s sounded reasonable in the article. I sounded like a liar and a lunatic. If I had said what the reporter claimed I told him or written what he said I wrote I would have been a liar and a lunatic.
I also heard the “maid from hell” stories about Michelle that you mentioned – from a tabloid journalists on E! – some arrogant clown with a bowtie from the Star. The idea was to present Michelle as a person so biased in favor of O.J. and so jealous of Nicole that her word could not be trusted in O.J.’s defense. I’m sure that’s why the defense never called her. Really now, wouldn’t you want a housekeeper who was loyal to you and “anal” in her duties? Wouldn’t you be surprised if she wasn’t a bit territorial about the house and she didn’t have “territorial” conflicts with Nicole?
The ’89 incident was just that, an incident. It doesn’t say that Michelle was good and Nicole was evil. It doesn’t say that evil Michelle provoked the good Nicole. It says only that they didn’t like each other and something happened to cause Nicole to attack her. In the ’94 incident where Nicole went after Michelle and punched her in the face so hard that she ended up on the floor, she told Cora Fischman and Kato what she did and admitted that she did it just because she hated the woman and she lost her temper.
The story was often repeated in the press and in the civil trial that Michelle’s behavior got go out of hand that O.J. fired her. He didn’t. The wife of the man Michelle worked for before she hooked up with O.J. died and he asked her to come back to work for him. After the slapping incident she stayed around long enough to break in Gigi. Then she was not disgruntaled. She was not fired. She quit. The separation was amicable.
I heard the story about Kato’s problems with Michelle, too. That’s the source I was trying to locate for Michelle’s bungalow living quarters. O.J. liked to keep at least one bungalow open in case one of his older kids wanted to move back to Rockingham. If both of them decided to move back at the same time, no problem – until Kato moved in. Why wouldn’t she be upset with Kato? She lived on the estate and Kato represented a constant threat of her having to move back into the “crappy little room” off the kitchen. – Jasper
