During the course of our discussions we hit upon several avenues of inquiry that nobody had taken a serious look at before. We discovered numerous discrepancies in testimony and evidence that no one before us has tried to resolve and we have been appalled to discover that critical bits of information that were once easily obtained have vanished. The things that disappeared first from the web were the things that don’t show up in the most popular books, either. That’s not a coincidence.
You see what you do on the web because somebody figured that it was important enough to preserve. Most of that information is contained in the transcripts and the most popular books on the O.J. case by authors like Fuhrman, Marcia, Darden, Bosco, Vannatter and Lange, Cochran and Robert Shapiro. If they didn’t think something was important enough to document and preserve for the public it soon got lost in popular searches on the web. Some information you will find only in the transcripts, thanks to Jack Walraven, or on Dick Wagner’s site thanks to him and Rose. I have been startled more than once to find the only references to some information that used to be available on CNN or CNBC now comes up only at Smartfellows Press.
Who could have figured that key snippets of information we gathered from photos and commentators between breaks in the trial or on talk shows like Geraldo, Oprah, Larry King and various Court TV shows would be needed years later as primary sources?
I don’t think it’s good enough for two people to say that they saw the same thing even if we have absolute faith in their integrity. How many times have you carried around a clear impression of something only to learn when you looked at the photo or read the words you thought you remembered showed something else? For instance, I didn’t find the reference you were seeking for the “red spots” on the floor. Miss Marple did. I found the reference to the Willie Ford tape you recalled that led to the questioning of Burt Luper about the spots and Gerry Uelmen’s question about the taco sauce that you could have associated with the spots. If those posts disappeared the only thing anyone would have to go on is your recollection that I found the Luper reference to the spots. Someone else might remember it the same way you did for the same reasons – because they made the same associations.
Allan Park recalled that O.J. said he overslept. Rachel Ferrara said that Kato told him the same thing. But Kato said that HE ASKED O.J. if he had overslept. That’s what he most likely told Rachel but her “shorthand” memory recorded it the way Park did. When I was writing The Smoking Gun I did a whole chapter based on my recollection that in Murder in Brentwood Fuhrman cited the movie The French Connection. Later I looked for the exact quote…. It wasn’t there. He never mentioned the French Connection. He just said so many things to call up the image of Popeye Doyle that I THOUGHT I read it.
This is a tricky one, Charlie. I don’t see any easy answers. –Jasper
