I am well aware of how memory can play tricks. That’s why I wrote that I couldn’t find Charlie’s taco sauce it in the transcripts, where her memory told her it was mentioned (it was associated with the Willie Ford tape but it wasn’t in the tape). That’s why we went through so much trouble trying to get the quote from Eliot’s book that Miss Marple recalled – to make sure that she got it right.
My distrust of memory is why I went back and checked the transcripts for the source of my assertion that Arnelle or Gigi said that Gigi stayed in the guesthouse nest to Arnelle’s. My information was correct but my source was wrong. That’s why I couldn’t find it where I thought it was. But I did find it. Charlie was in that situation with the red spots on the floor before Miss Marple found the source. The only remaining question was where and how she associated the spots with taco sauce. I was sure it wasn’t in the transcripts because I DID search “taco.” Where do you think I got my references to Uelmen?
Not everything we know about the Bundy murder investigation is in the transcripts. You got a considerable amount of your information from Marc Eliot’s book. Both of us saw the cobwebs but not during the trial. Expert commentators filled us in on all kinds of details during the commercial breaks in the trial. It seems to me that I heard Alan Dershowits specifically say that the spots on the floor were taco sauce. However, the important things are that they looked like blood but they weren’t and it’s highly unlikely that they were there before O.J. left for Chicago. .
You used portions of the transcripts you found where Kato said that he brought up the thumps without considering the fact that he was being questioned by Fuhrman at the time about where he was and what he did the night before. Then you question why the order in which the detectives walked behind the main house to get to someone they could talk to is important and you use Vannatter and Lange’s explanation for going to the maid’s quarters inside the house to show that Gigi was staying there….
Obviously you missed this before so I’ll say it again: Arnelle knew that Gigi did not stay in the “maid’s room.” It makes no sense for her to have taken the detectives there and she said that she didn’t. The question was whether Arnelle or the detectives told the truth. Toobin confirmed that she took them past the last bungalow (Gigi’s room), which was erroneously marked “Arnelle’s room” on the prosecution charts. They asked her about the Bronco and she took them to the Ashford gate where O.J. usually parked it. This rout does not go past Kato’s room or the “maid’s room” in the house.
This gets us back to the detectives’ line of travel and whether Phillips or Fuhrman first announced that he saw somebody in Kato’s room. If Phillips and Lange were ahead of Fuhrman and on their way to the last bungalow it had to have been Fuhrman who stopped them and brought them back. As you said, it didn’t matter which end of the bungalows the detectives started. For some reason, though, it seemed to matter to Fuhrman. Blood trails mattered to Fuhrman. He started one on Bundy with his bleeding killer theory and linked it to Rockingham with a tiny spot that could have been taco sauce. –Jasper
