The house had two front entrances (see Animations). I don’t think there was as much traffic through the door at the north entrance that opened to the foyer as there was through the French doors next to the big tree that opened into the breakfast nook. The detectives went mostly in and out of the French doors. It was the shortest route to where they wanted to go.
The blood drops were bunched tightly on the FAR side of the foyer. Consequentially, had one of the detectives simply stood next to them when Kato was led out of the door there was no chance of him stepping in them. That’s why I gave so much weight to your idea that the purpose of showing Kato the blood with other dark spots nearby was to create an illusion. Now that you have given us Charlie’s source for the “taco” spots (hold your fire, John, until you’ve read everything), that position is greatly strengthened.
Charlie was right about the information coming from the video that Willie Ford made. It showed a black leather glove in the living room that Det. Luper had fund in O.J.’s bedroom and carelessly left downstairs. The context in which he mentioned the spots was in explaining the glove. He saw the non-blood trail long after Kato departed. He probably thought that he made a big discovery and was embarrassed to find that he hadn’t. The defense was content to show that he hadn’t fond anything incriminating to O.J. with the glove or the spots and to suggest that “the cops” planted the socks. The defense didn’t know which detective “discovered” the socks. Luper made it sound as though he had.
Luper didn’t say the spots were taco sauce. Everyone treated the subject as a non-issue at the time because they did not turn out to be blood. But when you consider Uelmen’s speculation that the spot above the door handle might have been taco sauce you have to wonder where that SPECIFIC idea came from. Luper’s spots on the floor seem to be the most likely answer. Whether or not we were told what the spots were, it’s a cinch that the defense found out what they were. They just never thought of them as you did to have been planted to create the illusion of a blood trail inside the house. As John pointed out, the cops did everything in their power to find one and they couldn’t.
The problem I have with Kato being led through the foyer is that the detectives had no logical justification for doing it – except to give Kato the impression that there was a blood trail in the house though the main door. Avoiding the blood drops on the driveway was easy because the police knew where they were. But they could have made easier by taking everyone out of the house through the breakfast nook doors. Why didn’t they?
I can’t see any reasonable way around it; Charlie was right and so were you. –Jasper
