Several people e-mailed me about the feeling they got just from LOOKING at Fuhrman. As I have said before, he creeped me out, too. I dismissed my feeling as a function of my belief at the time that if O.J. didn’t do it the killer planted both gloves. Fuhrman was the only person in the case who could be positively linked to both gloves. Even when I scratched him off of my suspect list because of his unchallenged alibi, looking at him still gave me the willies.
Something about Fuhrman’s eyes reminded me of a couple of men I knew in the Army who could have easily become professional hit men. I like to think of myself as a fair-minded guy so it bothered me that I had this feeling without the facts to support it. The more I learned about Fuhrman’s racism the more uncomfortable I was with the feeling because now I knew that it could have been no more than MY prejudice against him.
Feelings do not constitute evidence. They can come from anywhere and they might be wrong. Even if your feeling about Fuhrman’s thoughts on committing murder was right (which it was) it could have been wrong about his role in the Bundy murders. They may have been ONLY his thoughts.
The more I look at it, the more I think that the bad feelings people got about Fuhrman before they knew enough to make a “rational judgment” was actually more rational than it seemed. Once you do the “If O.J. didn’t…” exercise and factor in the genius of the subconscious mind there was plenty of evidence in the case for your subconscious to draw a picture of Fuhrman as the killer. You, among others, trusted your feelings. I rejected mine but eventually we came to the same conclusion.
When Pat Whetham admitted to me early in 1977 that she thought Fuhrman was the killer the minute she laid eyes on him, it occurred to me then, ironically, that this was a man who should NEVER testify in his own defense whether he was guilty or not. –Jasper
