You are so right that we shoulnd't judge people about how they behave under emotional stress. In particular men do feel they have to "hold the fort" and they hide their distress by "going on with business". Women are allowed to fall apart, hold on to others' and act out their emotions. Men mostly don't know how to.
Remember how much was made of the fact that O.J. went to the airport to pick up his golf clubs. He couldn't go back to his house, the phones were ringing constantly at his office and he probably thought "thank God, there is something I can do, I can go get my golf clubs and drive around for a while doing it." That's exactly what I know my husband would have done, so I never doubted that innocent act of just finding something to do.
