Miss Marple: I am quoting passages from the book and trying to keep it within context. Kato Kaelin was awakened at dawn by an urgent pounding on his door. He heard a voice say Police! Looking through to door window's wooden slats, he saw one man standing at the bottom of 3 steps. Behind him he saw 6 legs. Det Mark Fuhrman was the first to walk into the room. Vanatter, Lange and Phillips stayed behind but stepped down level with the entrance to the guest house.The one at the bottom of the steps asked him who he was a couple of times. Mark Fuhrman gave him a drug test.Kato asked all four men what's going on. They appeared annoyed and let it be known they were there to interrogate him not the other way around.(Now this is quoted) "Anything unusual happen last night? What did you do last night?"(doesn't say who asked this question)Kato told them he'd spent the night at home and made a few phone calls. Later on(in what may prove to be a majorvictory for the defense's theory of a police conspiracy), he told me he could not clearly remember who first brought up the thumping on the walls. According to Kato, he was going to insist on his rights, but didn't because he felt he had nothing to hide. he asked what was going on, and claims not to remember saying anything about the noises behind the house to Detective Fuhrman. Later on, Marcia Clark would insist he did. Kato's first clear memory of saying anything about it was to Vannatter, when they were already outside the house. "i believe, for some reason, they needed to prove I said it first," Kato told me. " I could have, though, I don't know."
Fuhrman then asked if he could look around. Kato showed him the modest quarters and even though he seems unsure of when he first mentioned the thumps, pointed out the picture, still tilted fro the force of the thumps, and the type writer that didn't work. (Not quoting) One of them asked if it was possible to get into the main house from there and he said no.The doors in the office could only be opened from OJ's side. He was asked about Arnell and Fuhrman led him outside while Vannatter and Lange began to pound on Arnell's door. One of the detectives asked Arnelle if she had keys to the main house. She said she did and went inside and got them. Vannatter said, "Both of you come with mus. signaling to Lange to come with him. They went up to the door of the main house about 15 feet fro Kato's roomVannatter took Kato to the bar area after asking him for the keys to the Bronco. He found some keys but wasn't sure if they were the right keys.Vannatter began to question himKato repeating the same question he had been asked earlier. When it came to the "thumping noises" Kato asked if Vannatter thought they meant anything. The detective shook his head no and turned away.Marc Eliot says Kato described everything that happened about the limo driver, OJ leaving, the duffle bag OJ calling about setting the alarm, all of it except the full extent of his search behind the pathway. He says, Curiously, the search did not seem to get as much attention as the rest. Marc Eliot says on page 120 there is a secret entrance and exit to the house that very few people know exists. A path near the pool, very close to the alley, leads through the tennis court to a neighbor's yard and driveway, from where anyone-a thief,a prowler, an accomplice,-canwalk out quietly from the Rockingham estate onto a deserted brentwood street. (Is this significant?) Also Marc Eliot says in the book tha Kato had been down the payhway several times in the weeks preceding the murders and never talked about this except to him because Arnelle had locked herself out of her place and she asked Kato to climb into an open window and open her door. If I put something in here that is not important, or redundant or has no meaning--sorry about that. And I did not proof-read.
