Because he was a good liar and was psyched up to do it. How does any guilty person ever 'hide' anything?

"...How could Kato answer Fuhrman’s question of what he did the night before without telling him about the thumps? No way. –Jasper..."

Easily. let's use YOUR theory. SUPPOSE KAELIN JUST DIDN'T HEAR THE THUMPS AT ALL WHEN 'SHIPP' MADE THEM?! After all, Shipp could not see into Kaelin's room. As far as Ship could know, Kaelin might not have even been in the room at the time. Even if he was, it's still possible that he wouldn't have heard them. Or that, as 'out of it' as he apparently was, that he would just simply forget to mention them.

In other words, there's no way your version of 'Fuhrman' could have known for sure what Kaelin's response would be.
