You indicated a mild interest in the logic problem I encountered when I was writing Messiah. Here it is.
In the world of the future I created in the first book of the trilogy, the most powerful institution is not a superpower government; it’s the media. One company dominates the media in most of the world and a shadow group runs that company. The influence of the shadow group derives from a few technological innovations, one of which allows them to literally see and hear past events as they happened. Another tool at their disposal allows them to create electronic facsimiles of human beings that are indistinguishable from real people when created by a top-notch programmer. These technologies make it possible for the shadow group to find definitive answers to some of history’s greatest mysteries and to fudge the facts if they threaten their grip on power.
The O.J. case is an historical event that has shaped laws and public opinion about many other social issues. In the first two books I could get around a definitive answer to the Bundy murderer’s identity by simply ignoring it. But for the image assassination requirements in Messiah (the logic problem) the bad guys could not have pulled it off without looking back in time, seeing who really did it and how O.J. was framed. –Jasper
