I worked with a white kid like this, who came from a rich criminal back ground. He did not see a reason to learn as his granddaddy did not learned book learning and he was rich. I convinced him by if he could not look over his book keepers shoulder, that he would cheat him. This clicked in the criminal mind set. Gotta show them that times have changed. But then you can't save them all. I also told him that the sheriff that had protected grand dad was no longer in office.
