Ludwig, Understanding the extremes to which people will go to avoid embarrassment is a powerful piece of knowledge…. I realized how big a deal it was way back in the 7th grade when a substitute English teacher asked the class a question that I didn’t understand. All of us were supposed to know the answer. As I looked around everyone except me appeared to know but nobody wanted to risk saying the wrong thing. I was more concerned about getting it straight than making a fool of myself so I raised my hand and said what I thought…… I got it wrong. I endured a few snickers but I aced the test. I was the only one who aced the test. ….. The problem wasn’t dumb students; it was poor instruction. We had different teachers telling us what to do in ways that lent themselves to different interpretations. The textbook was no help because it, too, was ambiguous. I got most of my answers from studying well-written comic books and magazine articles. I got the rest from asking potentially embarrassing questions in class….. All the way through high school I saw the same pattern. Few students were ever willing to risk asking a “stupid question.” Sometimes NOBODY knew what the hell the instructor was talking about but rarely more than one person in ten spoke up about it. The same thing happened in college. I saw it in the Army Reserves at staff meetings with high-ranking officers and non-coms. In the Regular Amy I saw it in all of the schools I attended – including demolition school. ….. Some people died when they realized the Titanic was sinking because they were embarrassed to leave their cabins in their nightclothes. People die in fires and floods for the same reason, to avoid embarrassment….. I lurked around the Court TV discussion board for a month before I gathered enough courage to post my first message. Even now I usually hesitate before I press the “submit” button for fear that I made an embarrassing error. When I read what I submitted I usually find at least one biggie (“My vibrated like a tuning fork” instead of “My ears vibrated like a tuning fork”). I feel a twinge of embarrassment and I move on, knowing that nobody but me cares about my mistakes as long as they can grasp what I was trying to say. For most people the mere prospect of getting something wrong that other people can see and snicker about is enough to keep them from taking the next step….. The same principle has been at work from the beginning of the O.J. Simpson murder case. Few people dared to say anything definitive until they had enough information to feel comfortable about voicing their impressions. The evidence said O.J. was guilty. The experts said O.J. was guilty. Opinion polls said O.J. was guilty. Comedians said O.J. was guilty – and anybody who didn’t agree was delusional or stupid. Reinforcements for this impression appeared at every turn along with ridicule for saying you believed otherwise. You had to break through the humiliation barrier to get to anything that was served up by the media in appetizing, easily digestible portions. The emotional investment that most people put in O.J. guilt and Fuhrman’s innocent, irrelevant or distracting role in the case is huge. The negative payoff for so much as exploring the possibility that they were wrong about O.J. or that Fuhrman had anything to do with it is something that they will go to extremes to avoid. –Jasper
