Denise on Spouse Abuse Although two people came forward during the civil trial with uncorroborated testimony of witnessing O.J. abuse Nicole, only Denise Brown had stories to tell during the criminal trial of seeing such abuse. She said that in 1987 or 1988 she was at a bar called the Red Onion in Santa Ana with O.J., Nicole and several other people when the "grabbing incident" took place. She said: WELL, WE ALL STARTED -- WELL, WE WERE ALL DRINKING AND GOOFING AROUND AND BEING LOUD AND DANCING AND HAVING A GREAT TIME. AND THEN AT ONE POINT, O.J. GRABBED NICOLE'S CROTCH AND SAID, "THIS IS WHERE BABIES COME FROM AND THIS BELONGS TO ME." AND NICOLE JUST SORT OF WROTE IT OFF AS IF IT WAS NOTHING, LIKE -- YOU KNOW, LIKE SHE WAS USED TO THAT KIND OF TREATMENT AND HE WAS LIKE -- I THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY HUMILIATING IF YOU ASK ME. O.J. told his lawyers that this was a lie. He said that Nicole had a cesarean section when giving birth to Sydney in 1986 so Nicole could not have children in the normal way. The prosecution called none of the people she named in her story to corroborate it. Denise said that in 1982 she saw O.J. thrown Nicole against a wall and then toss her out of the house for smoking. In this story there were also other witnesses to the event. None of those witnesses were called to testify in either the criminal or civil trial. Denise, herself, was not called to testify in the civil trial. After reading Phillip Baker's cross-examination of her during her civil trial deposition you won't have to ask why. --Jasper |
