Jasper, I am so glad that you posted this. It fits in exactly with my understanding of it. (Hanoi Jane and the POW's)
As a long-time and active member of Task Force Omega (me and Billy Ray Cyrus) of Kentucky, I am also well aware of the POW/MIA situation and know several MIA families. And families of those listed as POW's but never came home (or reports of them being POW's without any VN documentation).
I have deliberately listened to several call in talk shows that were dedicated to callers who are against ANY retaliation, call themselves for Peace, etc.
Reasonable people may have differences of opinion about whether or not we should have been in Viet Nam, Korea and a couple of other things such as the Gulf War. However, that is a vastly different situation than what we have now. We were attacked (viciously) on our own soil by people who call us Satan and wish to kill ALL of the people who are not of Islam.
I can't say that I was completely surprised by what I heard on the call in shows. I had already heard some of it from the regular posters on the OJS discussion groups.
What WAS surprising is how many took the SIDE of the Muslims. Who proclaimed the US as the BAD guy Who proclaimed, in fact, that we were Worse than the terrorists. They showed a definite sympathy for the terrorists. You would think from their comments that they would rather live anywhere but the USA little realizing that the Terrorists would have executed them already for disagreeing with them. The women would have been executed for "talking back" or not remaining "in their place".
It was surprising also how many were of the apathetic and downright cowardly types. When questioned, the host could find NOTHING that they would stand up for. Nothing! You got the impression that if terrorists invaded their houses and killed their wives and children or the husband and children in front of them, they would not lift a hand.
Others were just ignorant. Saying things like they didn't believe the terrorists would attack again and the government was just trying to scare us.
The sympathy for the "enemy" is what blew me away though. They had no idea at all what these particular terrorists are like or what they are capable of doing or what they WAnt to do. They talked as if the media had made Satans of these people when they were just people trying to get along and that WE were in fact Satan.
I heard a LOT of "moral equivalancy". A LOT of situational ethics. A Lot of relative ethics.
I am certainly hoping that this is a small group of people compared to everybody else. They saw no need to check the borders, no need to feret out the remaining terrorists, watching out for any more coming into the country. And other incredibly Ignorant stuff.
And I heard a lot of statements that the people or we DESERVED it and it was only fitting since we are such bad people.
Heard one say that the attack on WW2 was not an attack on the US but an attack on the JEWS who are in charge of the all the money at the WTC. That it had nothing to do with us.
What worries me is that this group is so sympathic to the enemy and the enemy is here in the US hiding out that they would actually HELP hide them from detection.
These folks don't seem to have a clue that the Talaban and the Terrorists make public statements daily or post on websites that they want to kill ALL "infidels". That means not only Jews but Christians, Buddists, and all other religions. They also speak of making the WORLD a Muslim world by killing all non-Muslims and taking over the countries.
They seem to forget that a plot was foiled a while back to take a plane and fly it into the Effel Tower. The last I heard, the Effel Tower was not American.
They seem to not know that the Bin Laden group talk openly and often about destroying the pyramids and the Spinx because it is NON-Muslim.
Or that even Muslims who don't agree with them are taken out and executed in the former international soccer field in Afgan.
