I was reading a chapter of The Smoking Gun where you mention the little rag doll that is pictured in Fuhrman's book.
That little rag doll is a Peruvian "dream catcher", or "worry doll". Peruvian children put the worry doll under the pillow at night after having told it about their problems and worries. While the child sleeps the doll will take away the worries.
I don't know if this was intentional or how well known the worry doll is.
