You have to remember that I was trained to make measurements like this and I've made thousands of them since I got started in automotive design over thirty years ago.
The thing that stood out to me was the fact that the shoeprints were IDEAL for measuring, with the sharp border and the toe of one shoeprint in an even size right on the grout line of tiles with a known dimension. You simply can't set up a shoeprint for measuring any better than that - which might help to explain Bodziak's lie about an uneven size. The kind of perfection I saw in the photo rarely occurs by chance. I've never seen anything like it in the real world.
Odd numbers also sound more impressive than even numbers. Engineers, designers and modelers ALWAYS use a decimal point with two or three digits when they're pulling numbers out of their ass to make themselves look good. I can't imagine why it would be different for FBI agents.
The rulers in the photos were Dennis Fung's. He is the one who made the on-the-scene measurements and the stride analysis that indicated a man over six feet tall WALKING away from the killing cage. Dr. Lee used the same kind of rulers and he did not disagree with Fung's measurement of the shoeprints or the stride of the man who made them.
Standard rulers don't lie. You couldn't make them lie if you wanted to unless you doctored the photos digitally. In 1994 that would have been a time consuming process involving special software and special expertise that was very hard to come by.
It wouldn't be the same as adding something to the picture that wasn't originally there or substituting one thing for another as was done with the photos of O.J. wearing the Bruno Magli Lorenzos. That was relatively easy to do, yet it took months to pull off. You'd have to change the proportion of the scale and the surrounding tiles on separate cells, recombine them and create another master. You'd have to do this with every one of the photos of every shoeprint taken at every angle frame by frame. And it would involve a slew of technicians working in perfect sync to purposely falsify the results.
All the killer had to do was plan ahead and wear a pair of shoes that matched a pair of similar shoes that O.J. was known to wear. O.J. was known to wear shoes that looked similar to the Lorenzos (the ones he wore to the recital - high top suede with rubber soles) and measured the same from sole to heel in size 12 (his Reeboks). But to implicate O.J. without proof that he actually owned them, they had to be rare, previously unused and they had to disappear. All of these features were characteristic of the Bruno Magli Lorenzos last sold in 1992.
One last thing about Bodziak's credibility…
When Dr. Lee testified that he saw imprints on the envelope and elsewhere on the murder scene with parallel lines that could have been made by a shoe in a smaller size than the Lorenzos, Bodziak said that no such shoes existed. To discredit Lee, he blew up a picture of parallel lines imprinted in cement and claimed that this is what Lee mistook for a bloody imprint. Law enforcement officials from around the country immediately sent in 79 photos of shoeprints from inexpensive tennis shoes that matched the ones that Lee said could have been shoeprints.
