Kari, In our case, the change was made for weather reasons. We had a horrific winter back in 77 and they changed it hoping to get in 2 weeks of school in good weather. That year, we had to make up days by staying and hour and half longer each day and we had to come in on Saturdays. Ours had nothing to do with the salary of the teachers.
Sydney's comment could have been more like a "what if" statement. As If school was in, I wouldn't go.
And yes, I believe both children went to private school that may or may not have had any missed days due to the earthquake.
