Another bulls eye.
Lange and Fuhrman were both highly critical of Marcia's tunnel vision approach to the case. In Evidence Dismissed it became apparent that even Marcia's old buddy Phil Vannatter had a hard time with some of the witnesses and evidence that SHE dismissed to keep her vision of the crime intact.
We're not talking here about a couple of Boy Scouts who were hindered in their own "search for truth" by Marcia Clark. The difference is in the witnesses and the evidence they wanted to include or suppress to keep from getting tripped up by subsequent information they couldn't dismiss. They wanted to keep their options open. Marcia closed them off by insisting on arguing a specific timeline, a questionable motive and a particular weapon. Her witness list was made up accordingly. That, however, does not mean that she "controlled the case."
Ordinarily you wouldn't have to wonder about the keeper of the checklist. That's a secretary's job, or someone assuming that "lowly" role. Bill Hodgman and Marcia Clark were the lead prosecutors. Vannatter and Lange were the lead detectives. Fuhrman and Roberts were the biggest "helpers." They consistently volunteered their assistance in big and "small" ways unmatched by anyone officially assigned to Vannatter and Lange or the prosecutor's special investigators.
In Murder in Brentwood, Fuhrman made a point of saying how he and Roberts performed chores that nobody wanted to do like searching for evidence in dumpsters and other uninviting places. Of all the official and unofficial investigators on Vannatter and Lange's team, Fuhrman probably had the best penmanship. That would make him the ideal choice for routine, unglamorous work that you normally don't get volunteers for… like answering the phone and taking notes. Secretary work.
There must have been other police officers who answered the phone at key points in the investigation but before I read Jolana's post about Brad Roberts answering the call from John McKinnon, I could find only one - his partner, Mark Fuhrman. Is that another Fuhrman/Roberts coincidence (we should count them sometime) or was answering the phone one of those "unglamorous" jobs they volunteered to do?
My sister is a secretary. She is VERY good at her job. She works for a guy who makes big bucks and gets paid to make big decisions. But where does he get the "routine" information he needs every day to do is job?
He gets it from her.
Who filters out the "relevant" phone calls from the "garbage"?
She does.
At the most basic level, who is really in charge of that office?
