Jean,

I think you may have something there -- Keith and Charlie, too.

It seems to me that you are all on the money with what you are focusing on but you are all focusing on different things. The operative word in Jean's observation was "subconscious." Consciously he wants to do everything as Keith said to appear tough and consistent and as Charlie says to win over the press, but I guess I agree with you because I noticed the same thing you did.

Time after time he does things to hurt himself that don't seem to be a part of any character flaw or political predisposition but things that make no sense and leave a lasting impression. It's a lot like watching H. Ross Perroet. His visit to Jim Jones University together with the remarks he made about it is a case in point. And who can we forget that brave line of his when confronted with the possible consequences of putting an innocent man death. Obviously he was certain the man was guilty or he would not have sighed his death warrant. He said that he agreed to kill the guy, no matter what the consequences were for him - George Bush. --Jasper
