I'm not sure I can agree with you 100%. I think Bush is trying to recover from the mistake he made when he postponed the execution of a convict; something he has never done before. Something his P.R. people obviously told him would make him look more "humane" to potential voters on the fence.
The basic fact is this: you can respect someone without liking them; it is Very difficult to like someone you can't respect. Back peddling is never respectable.
That is why he didn't recant his statement about calling a journalist a "Major League A**Hole". It may not have been very smart to be caught saying it, but it was smart not to look like a weakling by giving a hollow apology.
