Kari, Don't feel guilty because you were approved for social security disability payments and someone else wasn't. It is determined by how severe your disability is and if it prevents you from doing any substantial work activity. Your disability must have lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months or longer. Age is also a factor and what the job market is like for the work a person could do. There are people who work with amputated limbs. I worked with a guy whose leg was amputated in the Vietnam war. He did a lot of things. Maybe the policeman could have had a desk job in the police department or could be trained to do something else. If you received it, you were entitled to it.
