Charlie,
Dunne isn’t the key. The Key is Alfred Regnery.
When I wrote The Smoking Gun 2 I didn’t have a strong fix on who Lucianne Goldberg was. It all came back to me when I was trying to find the only link I had between Fuhrman and Goldberg at the time in Chapter 10: Going Down?. In that chapter I identify her as “a publicist with Mark Fuhrman’s publisher.”
In other words, Goldberg was not an independent literary agent. She was in charge of publicity for Regnery Publishing. That answers the question I had about the economics of turning Fuhrman over to an agent when he already had a publisher. Goldberg was already on Regnery’s payroll. That means she was working for Alfred Regnery, not Mark Fuhrman. It also means that Murder in Greenwich started with Regnery Publishing, not Harper, which eventually published it. Thus, GOLDBERG’S call to Dunne on Fuhrman’s behalf. Fuhrman knew that Goldberg worked for Regnery, which meant that he also knew she had ties to Dunne. Regnery was the key that opened all of the doors of opportunity to Fuhrman.
So, two questions remain. Who contacted whom and when?
You can tell by the paragraph in which I mention Goldberg that I was referring to the bit I heard on the Paul Harvey Show on September 17 coupled with the Goldberg interview. I couldn’t have gotten that from Fuhrman because I didn’t hear him say it. I heard it from Paul Harvey and Lucianne Goldberg.
The Paula Jones chronology tells us that the first transcript of the Tripp-Lewinsky phone conversation was released to the press “in mid-September.” That’s undoubtedly what inspired the Paul Harvey story and the tape of the “happy” interview with Goldberg. My guess is that tape was made when Regnery still thought he was going to publish Murder in Greenwich in January ’98 (the Drudge report) and Goldberg’s “Fuhrman is a liar” statement following his interview in August came after he decided to switch publishers.
Goldberg didn’t drop him. He dropped her when he dropped Regnery. –Jasper
