Lollie, … …. Phillips was the only name from the names we know that flat out doesn’t belong in the acknowledgements. That is, it doesn’t belong unless he did something special for Fred that isn’t in anything I’ve read, seen or heard about. That’s why his name jumped out at me and why I looked up his testimony in the civil trial to see what he said about his relationship with the Goldmans. ………..While I was at it I noticed something peculiar Phillips did that he also did in the criminal trial. He stumbled over the names of the detectives he called when Rossi told him about the murders. In the civil trial (October 29, 1996) everyone knew he misspoke when he said, “I called Mark Fuhrman, Brad Roberts, and Tom Lange.” He meant to say “Tom Nolan.” In the criminal trial he made it appear that he got in touch with three detectives instead of four (they work in pairs) because he and Mark Fuhrman were partners and Brad Roberts was paired with Tom Nolan – a rookie. ……….Keep in mind that he did this every time on cross-examination, not direct. ………..In Phillips’ Feb 15 testimony when Cochran asked him what he did after he called Roberts he said: “I then also notified -- I believe I might have done this on my cellular phone en-route to the station -- I also notified Tom Nolan who is a West L.A. homicide detective. I believe I notified Tom Nolan after I made three other attempts to notify three other detectives who were not available, and then I notified Tom Nolan and he said he would meet Detective Roberts either at the station or at the scene, depending on what time they got in there together.” ……..Huh? Depending on what time they got in there together? What does THAT mean? …………A bunch of things are wrong with that reply – not counting his implication that he made Roberts and Nolan partners for the investigation. He had the entire pool of LAPD detectives he could draw on to barrow a pair of experienced detectives. He could have borrowed other experienced detectives from West L.A. for temporary assignment to Homicide. Instead, he went to the trainee pool and grabbed Nolan. And then he stumbled over when and how he called him and what he planned to do with him ……….. The next day he says he “thinks” he called Nolan. Two days later when Cochran asked him about latex gloves police used, he said“… I was not involved in the actual crime scene preparation of any kind WITH TOM NOLAN OR TOM LANGE. ………… Tom Nolan had nothing to do with the crime scene. He was long gone before Lange arrived. Phillips meant to say “Tom Lange.” Tom Nolan” slipped out first. ………….Everybody makes mistakes like Phillips made with the two detectives named Tom but here is always an association between the two that is big enough in our minds to get our lines crossed where they intersect. I wonder what it was with Nolan and Lange in Phillips’ mind. My best guess is that he had big worries about both of them. –Jasper
