Solitairea1, …Your observation that Fred’s hatred for O.J. (which I believe is that part of himself that he blames for Ron’s death) has destroyed any love he had for his son is very astute. Perhaps that’s why you and Buster don’t see any love in him for Ron – because he has replaced it with hate for O.J. The human animal is very good at replacing one strong feeling with another one in a pinch. If you’ve ever been paralyzed with fear and got so pissed at yourself for not taking action, you know what I mean. …………..What normally happens when the guilt component of our grief assumes huge proportions is that we suffer deep depressions and start punishing ourselves with self-destructive behavior. We do this even when the guilt is irrational, which it usually is, like the lone survivor of a plane crash who starts shoplifting or exposing himself to children in public. ………..Maybe, by going after innocent people to get money that he has no way of getting from O.J., Fred is trying to make people hate him. That was the impression I got when he “won” O.J.’s Heisman, something he was taking away from O.J.’s children, grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as much as from O.J., and when he took furniture out of O.J.’s old, sick mother’s house. To my knowledge, the Browns never did anything like that. Remember when he tried to have a woman thrown in jail because he thought she might know something about O.J.’s hidden assets? He has done everything he can to push the Browns out of the award-collection picture. And where has he indicated that he would do anything unselfish with the money if he did get it? ………..So far, nothing has worked. More people are turning against him but not enough. If he got all of his award money, he would have to get it from someone other than O.J. Then what would he do? He reminds me of a famous Civil War general who was hellacious on the defense and unstoppable on the attack – until he started to win a decisive battle. Fred doesn’t want a decisive “victory.” He wants the “war” to go on and on. Winning it, I believe would leave him to face the reality that he DID replace his love for Ron with hate and nowhere to direct that hate but at himself. ………O.J., on the other hand, will be financially secure no matter what happens. What he needs is the restoration of his good name of himself, his siblings, his four children and any children they might have. There is NO QUESTION that O.J. loves his children. The only way Fred could collect his share of the award is if, by some legal magic, he got it from money generated by O.J. that was supposed to go to them. That means O.J. would have to come out swinging with people like us in his corner. To win back his rightful place in history for himself and all generations of Simpsons to come, that would be the best thing that could happen to him. –Jasper
