Jean, …Only three dogs are involved here: Nicole’s dog, Schwab’s dog and the dog with the unidentified man that Karpf reported when he went to his mailbox. ………….The Akita had blood on its paws and belly but he had a hell of a lot more to attract him to where he got bloody and the smell of it. I think that the odor had a lot to do with why he wanted no more part of it when Schwab showed up. …………Schwab’s dog was already close to the smell with the blood on the Akita. …………When Karpf saw the man with the dog, they were past the murder scene and past him heading north. That dog might very well have barked and pulled toward the smell of blood when he passed Nicole’s courtyard on the other side of the street. But it was on a leash, the man would not have smelled it and it seems likely to me that he would have pulled on the leash to keep the dog moving. ………….Some of the barking that Heidstra heard as he neared as he exited the ally on the way to his apartment could have been that dog, adding to his impression that the barking of the Akita and the little black dog was continuous when Schwab was not in range to hear it. –Jasper
