Paddy, …. When you smell a large amount of blood for the first time you might not think that you smell anything because it’s nothing like getting a whiff of cigarette smoke or rotting vegetables through your nostrils. It goes straight to your brain. That’s why I think many people who are exposed to it in a gruesome setting report that they were sickened by what they saw when it was actually the smell. If it’s new to you, you might feel queasy without realizing why but you won’t necessarily vomit. ……….The stench of death comes from decomposition just as the odor of blood comes mostly from coagulation. Usually, it takes hours for these odors to register distinctly. ………..It is difficult for me to generalize about this because my first experience with it was in a situation where my clothes were saturated with blood in a hot and humid climate and I could not wash them or get out of them for days. Many things were going on in my head and my environment that changed my perception of the odor in contradictory ways ranging from euphoria to disgust. Only several days AFTER I was free of the constant odor did my mind separate the odor from everything else I associated it with. ..……..A few days later the lead element of our column fired up some VC, killing one outright while the others fled leaving a heavy blood trail as they went. These guys obviously weren’t dead, yet, so we followed the blood trail to kill them. I smelled the blood before I saw it – and I LOVED IT! ……… Now picture yourself with this mindset in the killing cage of Nicole Simpson’s front yard waiting for “the enemy” to get into position for your attack. You are in no danger of being killed outright and the odds are heavily in your favor that you will make both kills quickly and easily. However, you have to make it look like something it isn’t. You have to make it look like a rage killing. You have to make it look like both victims tried to defend themselves and one of them put up a terrific fight. You have to make it look like someone else did it and if you make a single mistake that can be traced to you, you will end up on death row. These factors make it a life or death struggle for YOU. Chances are good that you will experience an adrenalin rush that distorts your sense of time. You are having a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE and you don’t want it to end. ………This is what the length of time between the onset of the attack and the killing stroke tell me what happened to the killer. He was riding a combat high. Blood begins to coagulate as soon as it leaves the body so a person in close proximity to it would have to smell it. I don’t think the killer was revolted by it. I think that because of the way he saw himself and what he was doing, he reveled in it. –Jasper
