Your explanation that Fuhrman and Roberts switched the real keys Goldman had for the keys to nowhere seemed plausible, but raised the questions: What was the point and why leave a clue trail to nowhere? Goldman having his apartment keys is a completely neutral item as a clue to the crime that points to no one or nothing because he would be expected to carry them so that they neither exonerate nor incriminate anyone. Why then mess with such a neutral clue, especially to do it in a way that cannot possibly implicate but only exonerate Simpson because at the least it obviously raises questions about how Goldman came to be there if he didn't take his apartment keys when he allegedly left there to head for Bundy. So by messing with this clue in this way, the pair would have been dealing a serious blow to any frame up of Simpson. Even worse from their point of view is the switch in the keys definitely pointed away from Simpson. It's only saving grace was that it didn't immediately and directly point to them (except your scenario shows how it could indeed suggest it). I'm not clear whether the cops realized early on they didn't have Ron's apartment key. What suggrest that they knew is that they never booked the keys to nowhere because Goldman's father said they received them from the coroner's office who apparently recovered them from the trouser pocket. Lange confirms that he and Ratcliffe searched Goldman at the scene for identificatio, so they must have known about any keys in his pocket. But no one ever said anything about that set at the criminal trial. That's why I ahve a hard time gleaning what point Fuhrman and Roberts could have thought they were making by switching those keys when leaving things alone far better served there purpose by raising no questions that switching they keys automatically generated.
