Marilyn, …The Fourth Estate now exists only on the Internet in forums like this one that most people have never heard of. I’m with Eliza all the way on requiring evidence that Fred Goldman was involved in criminal activity. …………Unfortunately, we cannot rely on the newspapers “of record,” the major news magazine weeklies or the major TV or radio networks to show us that evidence if they have it. What we get depends entirely upon what the “mainstream media” and the tabloids believe is in their best interest to report. For whatever reason or reasons, the “news” media invested so much of its credibility capital in demonizing O.J. Simpson before his arrest that this slant became the standard for viewing all of the evidence and testimony in the case. …………..The “truth,” according to these sources, was that O.J. had a Jekyll and Hyde personality. In his Hyde mode he was prone to fits of rage that he took out on Nicole numerous times with savage beatings. He was a liar who told police that he cut himself on his cell phone and told three conflicting stories of his whereabouts during the time of the murders. A blood trail went from the murder scene into his driveway. His Bronco was parked at a suspicious angle in front of his house. It had blood on it and in it. A limo driver with no ax to grind against anyone saw him return from the area where police found a bloody leather glove matching the one the killer found on the murder scene. We got all of this within five days of when the bodies of his young ex-wife and her younger male friend were butchered with a sharp instrument – a knife or an entrenching tool. ……….This kind of reporting is what I was refereeing to in my post about Pellicano, Viner and the New York Times reporter who got fired for his professional misconduct. The operative words were, “Can’t see what all the fuss is about. He sounds like a typical New York Times reporter to me.” I don’t see how Jean missed the “pot calling the kettle black” sarcasm in the rest of that message. ………What we don’t know about Fred fits the formula of what we thought we knew about O.J. and what “the police” discovered before the so-called slow speed chase. We got enough information to form pictures in our minds of what the truth must be if we examined it objectively but not enough to do it. Since then, using the mainstream media reporting on the Ramsey case, the Skakel case and the Blake case (to name a few) as guides for useful information we can be sure of only one thing. We are going to get the “news” that the media elite believe is “good for us” and them to think about. –Jasper
