There are some possibilities. It could be that all 3 vehicles that Heidstra saw were of a light-colored SUV which would have struck him as very very odd. Perhaps SO odd that he just didn't ID them as such.
Recall, we said it possible that an OJ look-alike was used for attracting attention- a la Jill at the intersection. THAT vehicle was traveling north. The "decoy" goes north and the killer and others go South to get away.
THAT is very reasonable given the dog walkers and joggers in the neighborhood who would be possible eye witnesses to things.
I just thought of something when thinking of possible 911 calls there. I, too, never heard of any and I think after the Oct 93 big one--where tapes were made--there would have been a record of them.
However, what we do have---and heard little about--were the harassing phone calls that were bad enough for NIcole to contact the police and Fuhrman and Phillips ended up working it. Well, what better way to get inside the house if you were a cop--that set up some harassing calls that were "real" to Nicole but a game for others? Or a ruse?
Also, usually when something like this is investigated--they put equipment on the phone to trace the calls---or caller ID. Was this equipment still in place on June 12th? Or did she have caller ID. Back in 94, this was not the usual equipment that is in place now for many people to screen calls. It was still pretty much a function of the phone company or the cops.
It is said the guy's identity was found out and the calls stopped. I always found it odd we never learned more about this guy and what happened to him if anything.
If nothing else--it would get Fuhrman close to Nicole again. And how did Fuhrman and Phillips end up with it when they are in Robbery Homocide? Was because Nic was a celeb or was it because MF planned it that way?
