Of course, I am making the assumption of legit cases. Most are-most aren't frames or hinky or unusual cases. Of course, with the "real" evidence, the experts can "play" with it as suggested on the Law and Order program last night.
It was fiction, of course, but in that case, the cops went ahead with the arrest and the DA's went ahead with the prosecution on the belief that the fingerprints did match. They had no idea that their expert had decided to be the person who would "make the case" come hell or high water for them.
