Most likely he was running liquor or hiding his own stash. For centuries wealthy people had secret passages and quick retreats. To be honest as I always am if I had the money I'd build a house with all kinds of secret rooms and passages. Not for illegal purposes, but to be able to get away from the world when it becomes to stressful. Ford, with all of his faults was a bit like Edison in more ways then their bigotry. They loved to squirrel away and do their inventing and ideas in secret/private.
