Charlie-
Karpf says he came on Dorothy and entered the alley, going by the back of Nicole's place. As I indicated before, he would have to swing out to the left a little bit after entering the alley to turn into the garage (garage is at an angle). There is a picture of his garage on Dick's site in the article "Who heard the dog?". His headlights would not have been directly on Nicle's parking pad and at that time there was bushes planted between Nicole's garage and the neighbor to the south. Karpf does not say if he came on Dorothy going west or going east. If he was going west, he would have gone by Heidstra at the tree or his apartment if he was later than 10:45pm.
You are right there was a lot of activity at that time in the area. A lookout could have been walking a dog to blend into the neighborhood. The dog he had could have been the kind to discourage other people from walking by at a critical time.
